Where on Earth...? MISR Mystery Image Quiz #1

Here's an opportunity to play geographical detective! This MISR image was acquired by the instrument's vertical-viewing (nadir) camera on June 12, 2001. The swath is approximately 380 kilometers wide. Choose any reference material you like and see if you can answer these questions:

  1. This collection of islands, or archipelago, is part of what country?
  2. The first national park in the area was designated in 1989, and includes a large complex of sand dunes. What is the park's name?
  3. The Independence Day holiday is celebrated on October 10. From whom was independence gained?
  4. A tourist attraction is a 50-acre orchid garden started in 1977 by actor Raymond Burr. What is the name of the garden?

MISR was built and is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA, for NASA's Office of Earth Science, Washington, DC. The Terra satellite is managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology.

A new "Where on Earth...?" mystery will appear periodically.
